So this week it’s not going to be a full fleshed review. Not like youre usually doing those anyway, even more half assed this week I guess?
Yes, well maybe so. I recently got the new Call of Juarez game off of Steam. Thought I would kill a couple of hours. Why, the last one was a cheat? No the last one was good only too short. They lied abit about the playtime. That’s it, otherwise it was a decent game and I love the old west style, the cheesy acting and storyline.
Now I bought this game knowing it wasn’t a full release like the last one was. Having that in mind id figured maybe its shorter still, using the same engine and basically I figured I bought an expansion more or less. It was better I take it? No it was not. To be honest I haven’t finished it yet, that’s why im not calling this full fleshed. Why not wait until you’ve finished it then? Because I’m probably not going to. I played it for about 4h maybe abit less. I gave it a good shot. What’s so bad about it?
Well let’s take a look.
Let’s take a look back to the older game (Above). Here are the graphics in the older game, doesn’t look like your Crysis or your Battlefields but it is charming and it’s good enough that it doesn’t distract, and it’s really fun at times. A game doesn’t have to be highest end to look good. Don’t get me wrong though, I love Battlefield. Anyway here is that game or rather what I expected from the new one. I didn’t expect a much better game. Anyway here look at the new one (Below). Okay so why re-invent the wheel? I do not understand, the people who are going to buy this probably had your older games, like me
Well obviously this is very ambitious for $15 release and it shows.
The graphics all though pretty to look at can be a tad hard to make out. Meaning sometimes the enemies blend into the background in weird ways. No you just suck. Well so there is that.
Otherwise it looks good enough its quite a fun design. It does look better than the older game for sure.
The story is a tad too cheesy Its beyond the cheesy I like and also he keeps telling these side tracks that you have to play but didn’t happen which is annoying, but you can turn off the story mode and just do action or even just the duels if you want. Now its kind of funny i havent checked out the arcade mode but there barely is a story in storymode. Im guessing it turns off his annoying voice that runs the entire game.
Now here is what surprised me, the gameplay. You have your usual FPS controls and it feels good enough I guess, to walk around and aim and all that. But you cannot hit your enemies at all time.
What in the hell were they thinking? If you’re not in the position the game want you to be in. The hits wont register. Say if an enemy is ducking behinds some wooden boxes and you flank him to a position with a clean shot. You won’t hit until he is out of cover or you are right the fuck next to him. It is ridicules sometimes i can’t shoot people because the “Rail” I’m on, isn’t in the right spot yet.
Often the game makes me go down a ladder or a house to a worse position to shoot people.
I could be on a roof with a clean shot but no I have to even the playing field so they have a chance. But whilst im taking the worse position they are shooting at me so you got to hurry behind that barrel and remember you cant shoot the guy in hiding.
Its almost impossible to not get hit even with a perfect strategy because its too open to sneak around and they have people everywhere. Yeah and you are forced out of an advantage. Of course on normal its fine but its still annoying that you have to forget common sense and strategy. Basically run and gun.
Which I guess would have been fine if the limitations weren’t so crappy. If the AI is too crappy to hide well behind cover, fix the AI do not make it impossible for me to shoot exposed body parts.
Seems like you’re harping on this one thing.
Here is the thing, if you run and gun like the game wants this still fucks with you because you run up. Shoot a guy in hiding and hit the magic wall. Then whilst reloading he gets out of cover and shoots you. Remember this isnt all the time but many times.
Oh yeah almost forgot the newest element to the game, the duel. What it is basically is your standing there when he goes for the gun you draw and shoot. You try and keep focus on the guy whilst youre waiting. When you can hear your own hearth beat you can shoot first.
Now they try to make you not want to by giving you less of a score for not doing a honorable kill.
I don’t really care about the score but they tell the story in a slightly different way.
Honestly this could have been good if the story tied this together more and the transition to duel mode was better. This could be tense but here it’s not really.
They also added Concentrate mode or “Bullet-time” as its really called in other games, and a useless skill tree that whilst providing useful perks feels really tacked on in the last minute.
Okay so is this a death of a franchise? I don’t know, I’m probably stupid enough to buy the next one.
If nothing else to show developers there is a market for western FPS games. Here is what I really want, something like Skyrim, a big open world RPG in western style. That would have been awesome.
This is the second awful Western themed game to suck in under a year.
So with that in mind what is your score?
Okay, so the graphics are pretty, gameplay from hell, awful mechanics but an alright style.
I will have to say 2.5 out of 5. Now that might seem high and it is abit but there is something there.
For one thing the animations on the revolvers and just the animations in general are such a joy.
The game would be good if they finished it, it doesnt feel finished.
That’s it for this week, sorry for no post last week but I’ve been sick and working like crazy.
Oh you have not, you’ve just been lazy. Honestly no, I have been so busy. I am still sick today so shut up.
Anyway look back next week when we are looking at something a bit special to me.
It’s not that great. Not to anyone else but it’s a milestone for me because it’s one of the things I’ve been looking for, for years. See you guys and until then take care. /Mr.F
