Next Review is on you.

19 Sep

Hi, i have a couple of new ideas but all my stuff is in storage, so i have mainly been playing Ps3 and pc these last few weeks.
I have been having a great time with Last of us and just got GTA 5 the other day which i have yet to try out.
The reason i havent added anything is because i basically have one free day per week from work, and im in the middle of moving.

Yesterday i finally had an extra day off and as i was in the middle of hooking up the CD32 work called me in.
Excuses, excuses.

Yeah i know. Anyway i was thinking as i will be getting all my gear set up the 30th or the 2nd maybe you guys have a request or something i can nick down and get.
If i get no requests i will probably just pick a Amiga CD32 or maybe a Megadrive game, i recently got some interesting Megadrive games that i havent really heard about before, maybe they are common knowledge but they are pretty weird and play alright.

Also if you guys want a system overview or anything special just ask. I dont have everything but never hurts to ask.

I will be back soon i promise.
Ive heard that before.

Alright, see you guys in the future / MR.F

Im not dead!

2 Sep

Hi, sorry for the long delay. I will return again but not really sure when that will be. Lets say im on vacation and ill decide later when it will end.
I have gotten a few new games nothing really super interesting. The most notable addition to my collection is probably the Atari Hokey Pong console, its is it great shape but is sadly missing the battery cover. It works but i need to open it up and try to get it working properly, there is no sound and also the image isnt great.
I also need to change the potentiometers as both are worn out. I might try fixing the original once actually as i havent tried that before because they are pretty cheap.

Im not going to do a review or anything on it since ive already talked abit about pong consoles and to be honest there is not much different with this one all though i have to say it is one of the better once ive played.
I do intend to do a guest spot in the future to fill out the site so if anyone is interested just give me a shout but no emulators or anything like that though. I want original hardware.

What else, what else. No, nothing for now i guess. Still waiting for Arma 3 to take off. Im so bored with the map.
Might be getting BF4 soon but i really don’t like paying a premium for Beta so it will probably be a while.
Im still not that impressed with any of the upcoming consoles. Besides Watch dogs and the new Gran tourismo, those will be such a joy, i kinda wantf Watch dog on PC but hey, at least i know i will be getting a Playstation 4 over the Xbox one now. Although we all know im getting both eventually i will probably get the PS4 closer to launch because of that.
Last thing before i go to sleep. Nintendo what are you doing? How is it that Wii U still have less interesting titles than the Game.Com? I mean come on at this point im considering getting the Psp vita before i get the Wii U. What the hell? You are so busy developing gimmicks that you have a hard time finding a use for them. Here is my advise, make games. They do not have to include the touchscreen all the time, the same problem that you guys had with the wii, it dosent have to include motion control. Whats wrong with just making a normal damn game?  Dont get me wrong, i enjoyed playing with the motion control as im sure i would like the touchscreen. So still have those games but use it when its needed not just because its there.

Enough, im not a Sony fanboy btw. In fact im still annoyed with them for killing off my favorite console developer SEGA. I still feel dirty whenever i play Sony.
One day Sony i will get you back. They didnt just kill Sega they did something way worse. They reduced them into selling out. Just look at Sonic, hes a beggar on the street taking every job he can get, on dark nights i can hear my copy of Alex kidd crying. I pick it up and whisper, the evil one will soon perish, just look at the numbers, this is its last hurray.

See you guys soon / Mr. F

Chase the chuck wagon – Atari 2600

6 Jul

Spoiler

IMAG2048

Last week i ordered a bunch of Atari 2600 games among them was this game Chase the chuck wagon. Quite an interesting little game.

You play as a dog trying to find your way to the chuck wagon (A chuck wagon is a wagon that transports food).
You obviously want all that tasty food so you need to find your way through four different mazes whilst avoiding all obstacles. The first obstacle you’ll notice is the flying thing, it’s different from time to time sometimes it’s a head or a barely visible duplicate dog. But it’s a flying object that whilst it it’s you slows you down. This can be a real hazard, especially if you’re playing on a high difficulty.

IMG_0504

The second obstacle is the dog catcher or maybe it’s your owner? It could be the owner of the Wagon for all I know as I don’t have the manual. Anyway when he gets a hold of you, you lose a life.

IMG_0505

Then we have time and let me tell you, time will get you in the end. Time, the silent killer that moves unseen and unheard. STOP IT! Right, sorry. Well you can choose Easy that’s 60 sec, then we have hard and that’s 30 sec which is a challenge. When completing a maze the chuck from the chuck wagon chuck food at you, chuck would chuck a chuck.. Would you stop it! Alright calm down.
Anyway they drop a bowl of food and with the right timing you can catch it for extra points.

IMG_0514

The controls are alright, it can be hard getting into the doors but that’s because of the tiny doors or openings it’s not because of bad controls.
The graphics are quite dull, just look at it. You basically have 4 colors and the background is black.
Why not green? It is a maze. It’s not a big deal I guess the dog looks good enough but even the dog is a bit simplistic even for Atari since it’s the only real effort in the game and the dude running around trying to get you is also quite boring looking. But I don’t hate the way the game look the wagon looks great.

IMG_0517

So why then is this interesting?
What’s really interesting and why I got excited is the history behind it. It was Developed by Spectravision and distributed by Purina a dog food manufacturer. This game is a failed attempt to create hype for a particular line of dog food that Purina sold called Chuck wagon.

IMG_0519

The game is based on the commercial in which a dog chase a small chuck wagon.
The only way to get this game back in the day was to cut out a proof of purchases from the bags of dog food and send them in. It is sort of sought after by collectors.
it’s not super rare but obviously it’s no Pac-man or donkey Kong it sells for around 80-100 dollars usually because of the fun history and because it’s rare.

IMG_0523

Okay short and sweet this week guys. What about rating? Almost forgot. It’s easy to the let something like value cloud the mind but really it’s a game hastily made and it shows. It’s not super interesting nor is it really fun. It’s kind of fun for about 15 minutes but to be fair the controls work and it’s not buggy or anything.
This gets a 2.5 out of 5.

Chaserat

Okay guys that it for this week. I will get to something besides 2nd gen stuff shortly I’m just so into that at the moment.

Well thats it really, happy gaming / Mr. F

Space Armada – Intellivision

29 Jun

Spoiler

IMAG2026

So here is a Space invader clone for the Intellivision. Every console at the time needed a Space invaders. When the original port came to Atari 2600 it more than doubled the sales of the system so obviously it’s a must have for any system and with the added power in the Intellivision how can it not be good?

IMG_0491

Okay so the controls are quite straight forward in fact the overlay only shows buttons for game select screen. You move with the D-pad and shoot with the shoulder buttons. I feel the controls are quite bulky and hard to use, it doesn’t seem to register all the time and also its quite slow.

IMAG2024

The graphics are good enough all though I wish the enemies were smaller. I understand it would have made them less detailed but then we could have had more rows of enemies and also more room.
I like the graphics of the bombs it looks good.

vlcsnap-2013-06-29-21h41m42s41

I do not like this game in case its not obvious, what it all comes down to is how bulky and slow it feels. I hate being cheated out of a kill and I feel like that each time I die, I know I made it but the damn fire button didn’t register. I don’t think it’s the controller, or at least I don’t have this problem with all the games, yeah it’s awkward and often slow etc but not this bad.

vlcsnap-2013-06-29-21h42m12s105

I like the sound, the effect is what you would expect and is the best part of the game really but its nothing special.

Alright so scoring this game is quite simple as I don’t find it enjoyable, the graphics are alright but with its flaws, sound is good but controls are god awful. This gets a 2 out 5. Id say get to the arcades or get it for the Atari 2600.

Armadarat

Sorry for the delay this week but I was in bad shape this moring and didnt even think i was going to put one up.
I basically winged it and this small thing. Yeah this was minimum effort. Indeed although probably about as much as this title deserves.
I see you guy next week / Mr.F

The Lost Vikings on the Amiga CD32

22 Jun

Spoiler

IMAG1940

Now im not sure how well known this game is.
I imagine its quite well known or atleast that it use to be since there was a version on basically all popular systems at the time of release, all though I don’t remember the second game at all so it must have been a much more limited release.
Okay so I wasn’t sure which version to review, the most known version is probably the one on the Sega Mega drive/Genesis or the one for SNES.
However the game I played as a kid was on the Amiga 500. Now that was a pirated copy I got off a mate. What a cheap skate. Yes I was also about 8-10 and didn’t know it was wrong so sue me. Anyway I still have that copy but of course I won’t review that since I in no way condone piracy.
I do have a copy on Amiga CD32 close enough I think. It also gives me a reason to show off the Amiga cd32.

IMG_0467

The games are exactly the same as far as I know and it looks the same on both Sega, Snes and Amiga in fact I began playing on the Sega mega drive and continued on the cd32 and the Codes work. That is pretty cool I think to be able to pick up where you are on a completely different console. Also look how short and sweet the codes are. I love you Lost Vikings.

IMG_0471

Okay so how is the gameplay? The objective of the game is to guide the 3 lost Vikings home. While navigating the levels 42 you will need all 3 of them because they all have different skills. What do you mean?
The first character is called Erik, he is the only one that can jump, he also runs fast and is able to take down certain walls and enemies with his head if you charge for long enough.

IMG_0451

Then we have Baelog, he is the warrior and thus is the only one with weapons. He has the ability to both swing a sword and shoot arrows.

IMG_0471

Lastly we have Olaf he carries a shield which grants him the power obviously to guard against all attacks but when pushing the action key he flips it around to use it as a hang glider.

IMG_0471

This is seriously one of, if not the best Action puzzle game ive ever played. The controls are solid as a rock, great catchy music, the graphics are great just look at the game over screen. That have to be the best game over screen ever seriously. Lit by moonlight, each character is zapped in while a boat on fire sails away in the distance. Beautiful.

IMG_0485

But the game is not without its flaws, it is too easy. Don’t get me wrong, you will die many times but its too easy to figure out what to do. When you die its often because you messed up a jump or just fell in lava. There are a few levels you might get stuck on but mostly it’s a breeze.

IMG_0456

Scoring time! Right, solid gameplay, graphics and music means this get 4 out 5. Easy, its one of he better games on the system, if you have a Cd32, SNES or Megadrive I say definitely pick up this game this is 42 levels you do not want to miss.

Lostrat

That’s it for this week. Trying to find something extra special for next week but im not sure what, I want it to be a Saturn game because I want to play some Saturn just not sure what. Doesn’t matter see you guys next week / Mr.F

Coleco Telstar Sportsman (Pong Console)

15 Jun

Spoiler

IMAG1888

So i promised I would do something special this week and here it is. The reason it took this long is because basically I needed someone to play with. It might sound arbitrary to you guys but ive been looking for the Coleco Telstar for years with no luck. But a few weeks ago I got it.
After a good cleaning and redoing a few cracked solders it works like a charm. Better than a charm since charms do not work.

IMAG1898

Now it works brilliantly. The coleco company may be more known for their Colecovision but I think its fair to say that even the Telstar series is pretty well known. It might look like any other pong console and it might be true but for me it’s a milestone in my collection. The reason being that I always wanted it. Not back in the day obviously but since I started collecting. Its been one of the goals.

IMAG1894

Just like with most pong consoles this uses batteries, have the option of using a 9v AC adapter (Mini-tele) but it wasn’t included with the console. The speaker is built in. I use the standard Atari 2600 adapter as it fits and is 9V.

Here are the games included in this particular Telstar (Sportsman).
1. Tennis (Your basic pong)
This is pong as it was in the beginning, nothing fancy but well done.

IMG_0418

2. Football (Its pong but you have one forward each, more detail later.)
What we have here is pong but you each have a forward. The Goalie works as in normal pong, But the forward works like this. When the ball come from the opposite court it’s just like normal but It hits the back the Forward passes it forward just in the direction that it hits. It takes some getting use to but its fun.

IMG_0425

3. Handball (I do not understand how its handball, more like squash training and only single player.
Im not going to lie I do not understand.

IMG_0432

4. Squash, you each take a turn throwing the ball against the wall.
This is really fun. Its squash, you take turn hitting the wall.

IMG_0436

5. Target (Light-gun shooting game)
In this game you shoot targets that bounce around on the screen.
If you have played any of the NES light gun games this feels the same.
Its fun but gets old quite fast. You have 15 shots each game.
In squash the medium difficulty switch doesn’t work.

vlcsnap-2013-06-15-10h26m56s217

6. Skeet (The same as taget but the target leaves the screen instead of bouncing)
Yeah so this is the same game as target. The problem is that since this game don’t have any points or keep track of the thrown targets you don’t have to hurry up, there is not timer nor any penalty for skipping a target. As with target the normal difficulty does nothing.

vlcsnap-2013-06-15-10h29m55s226

This is your basic pong console nothing special but I always wanted this particular one for some reason. And to get on in a crappy box and with a working gun I think is pretty cool.
So let´s score this sucker.
I don’t really know how to, to be honest, it plays smooth, the light gun works perfectly.
Its pong basically and how high do I score pong? I don’t know. 3.5-5? I think that’s fair.
The only complaint I have really on the console is that they don’t keep  a point system in the light gun game. Also handball? Other than that good console, good games.

col rat

That’s it for this week. This was nothing special. No it wasent I thought this was going to be cool.
But hey atleast I had a reason to play this against a pal for a while
See you guys / Mr.F

Call of Jaurez Gunslinger on PC

8 Jun

Spoiler

2013-06-08_00002

So this week it’s not going to be a full fleshed review. Not like youre usually doing those anyway, even more half assed this week I guess?
Yes, well maybe so. I recently got the new Call of Juarez game off of Steam. Thought I would kill a couple of hours. Why, the last one was a cheat? No the last one was good only too short. They lied abit about the playtime. That’s it, otherwise it was a decent game and I love the old west style, the cheesy acting and storyline.

Now I bought this game knowing it wasn’t a full release like the last one was. Having that in mind id figured maybe its shorter still, using the same engine and basically I figured I bought an expansion more or less. It was better I take it? No it was not. To be honest I haven’t finished it yet, that’s why im not calling this full fleshed. Why not wait until you’ve finished it then? Because I’m probably not going to. I played it for about 4h maybe abit less. I gave it a good shot. What’s so bad about it?
Well let’s take a look.

Duel_sunset

Let’s take a look back to the older game (Above). Here are the graphics in the older game, doesn’t look like your Crysis or your Battlefields but it is charming and it’s good enough that it doesn’t distract, and it’s really fun at times. A game doesn’t have to be highest end to look good. Don’t get me wrong though, I love Battlefield. Anyway here is that game or rather what I expected from the new one. I didn’t expect a much better game. Anyway here look at the new one (Below). Okay so why re-invent the wheel? I do not understand, the people who are going to  buy this probably had your older games, like me
Well obviously this is very ambitious for $15 release and it shows.

2013-06-08_00011

The graphics all though pretty to look at can be a tad hard to make out. Meaning sometimes the enemies blend into the background in weird ways. No you just suck. Well so there is that.
Otherwise it looks good enough its quite a fun design. It does look better than the older game for sure.

2013-06-08_00008

The story is a tad too cheesy Its beyond the cheesy I like and also he keeps telling these side tracks that you have to play but didn’t happen which is annoying, but you can turn off the story mode and just do action or even just the duels if you want. Now its kind of funny i havent checked out the arcade mode but there barely is a story in storymode. Im guessing it turns off his annoying voice that runs the entire game.

2013-06-08_00005

Now here is what surprised me, the gameplay. You have your usual FPS controls and it feels good enough I guess, to walk around and aim and all that. But you cannot hit your enemies at all time.
What in the hell were they thinking? If you’re not in the position the game want you to be in. The hits wont register. Say if an enemy is ducking behinds some wooden boxes and you flank him to a position with a clean shot. You won’t hit until he is out of cover or you are right the fuck next to him. It is ridicules sometimes i can’t shoot people because the “Rail” I’m on, isn’t in the right spot yet.
Often the game makes me go down a ladder or a house to a worse position to shoot people.
I could be on a roof with a clean shot but no I have to even the playing field so they have a chance. But whilst im taking the worse position they are shooting at me so you got to hurry behind that barrel and remember you cant shoot the guy in hiding.

2013-06-08_00016

Its almost impossible to not get hit even with a perfect strategy because its too open to sneak around and they have people everywhere. Yeah and you are forced out of an advantage. Of course on normal its fine but its still annoying that you have to forget common sense and strategy. Basically run and gun.
Which I guess would have been fine if the limitations weren’t so crappy. If the AI is too crappy to hide well behind cover, fix the AI do not make it impossible for me to shoot exposed body parts.
Seems like you’re harping on this one thing.
Here is the thing, if you run and gun like the game wants this still fucks with you because you run up. Shoot a guy in hiding and hit the magic wall. Then whilst reloading he gets out of cover and shoots you. Remember this isnt all the time but many times.

2013-06-08_00042

Oh yeah almost forgot the newest element to the game, the duel. What it is basically is your standing there when he goes for the gun you draw and shoot. You try and keep focus on the guy whilst youre waiting. When you can hear your own hearth beat you can shoot first.
Now they try to make you not want to by giving you less of a score for not doing a honorable kill.
I don’t really care about the score but they tell the story in a slightly different way.
Honestly this could have been good if the story tied this together more and the transition to duel mode was better. This could be tense but here it’s not really.

They also added Concentrate mode or “Bullet-time” as its really called in other games, and a useless skill tree that whilst providing useful perks feels really tacked on in the last minute.

2013-06-08_00045

Okay so is this a death of a franchise? I don’t know, I’m probably stupid enough to buy the next one.
If nothing else to show developers there is a market for western FPS games. Here is what I really want, something like Skyrim, a big open world RPG in western style. That would have been awesome.
This is the second awful Western themed game to suck in under a year.
So with that in mind what is your score?
Okay, so the graphics are pretty, gameplay from hell, awful mechanics but an alright style.
I will have to say 2.5 out of 5. Now that might seem high and it is abit but there is something there.
For one thing the animations on the revolvers and just the animations in general are such a joy.
The game would be good if they finished it, it doesnt feel finished.

rat jy

That’s it for this week, sorry for no post last week but I’ve been sick and working like crazy.
Oh you have not, you’ve just been lazy. Honestly no, I have been so busy. I am still sick today so shut up.

Anyway look back next week when we are looking at something a bit special to me.
It’s not that great. Not to anyone else but it’s a milestone for me because it’s one of the things I’ve been looking for, for years. See you guys and until then take care. /Mr.F

No Actual post this week.

1 Jun

Hi everyone there wont be a post this week due to me working alot. And you being lazy.
I was going to put up a half arsed review of a pc-game i have been playing but its only quarter arsed yet.
What i think ill do is to try ti finish it later tonight after work maybe and put it out tomorrow.

Thats it til then. /Mr.F
